The anti-socialism global conspiracy
Something we socialists have to accept is that capitalism is fucking exciting. All diamond dangerous; spicy, sexy, super-stimulating; buccaneering, pioneering, privateering; devil take the hindmost – that catering to our primal urges releases our inner anarchic ape. We need to admit that a social system providing equal access to available resources for every citizen makes a bloody boring world – by comparison.
One of those clever US Presidents said something like: ‘The trick to getting democracy right is in balancing equality with freedom. The more of one the less of the other.’ In America they favour the ‘freedom’ factor – you can become a billionaire, but you won’t be fed if you fall or fail. In Europe we lean towards nominal ‘equality’ – unless your father is minted you’ll never get rich, but you’ll always have food and a place to live. Makes yer choice.
Here’s a bit from my book: Warner found it hard to believe there has ever been a full-blown, dedicated Marxist. Anyone who’s read the material properly, deeply enough to fully understand it, should be clever enough to see the real problem; in PRAXIS – of application – that the human being will never embrace the negation of HOPE – there's no denying the keening potential, curiosity, a contrary willing that drives us on? You cannot apply the rules of science to people’s behaviour without destroying what makes them people…
A funny thing that the unskilled migrants currently cramming our Great British towns will never support the Labour Party – they haven’t come here to perform rather well; they came here determined to turn their kids into multi-millionaires – as a minimum!
I believe there was a meeting of Allied panjandrums sometime after the Second World War, consequential to the Bretton Woods Conference. The economists, bishops, professors and philosophers addressing the businessmen, stony faced: Twenty million soldiers died with 100 million civilian casualties and you are each owed billions in gold as a result of those actions. You cannot be thinking of another depression! It’s time to GIVE back. Not to mention the pronounced possibility they’ll rip us limb from limb if we don’t. And the oligarchs replied: Alright then. We’ll play along for one generation. Do your damnedest, ’cos in 25 years we’ll be coming straight back!
Which they just-about did. Trades unions were tolerated, towns with socialised civic services were bought and built, workers united all over the shop… until ’71, when the Federal Reserve, whatever that is, changed its standard from gold to oil; ensuring all global tradings thence would be wholly conducted in petrodollars through the great USA. Which caused a rampant, rightist resurgence – in the globalisation of financial services; special drawing rights; conservative programs in security, health, education; the Reason Foundation ensured private contracting for every American municipal service; the Industrial Relations Act in the UK would criminalise any union strikers; not to mention the cancellation of free school milk – was Thatcher’s personal contribution – starting as she meant to finish. We now see the results of their steadily escalating deregulation of banking and broking; the removal of tenants’ and workers’ rights to mollify hard-put employers and landlords; as treasuries vying for Mafia money are presently promising micro taxes on maxi assets by kleptocratic, neo-feudalist factors.
An ultimate irony as the world turns various shades of blue; with urban liberal v rural conservative cultural ethics as the latest wheeze; as political commitment reflects regional requirement not national policy. Brings a resurrection of Whigs and Tories from three or four hundred years ago when the only difference between parliamentary parties was your bench position inside the House with both mobs engaging elitist, plutocratic, corrupted programs – very much like your LEAVE or REMAIN?
