Brexit Redux

My facebook quip: ‘I bet the prick who dreamt up the term, ‘BREXIT’ is hugely pissed off that he or she was unable to trademark a public word?’ Has since been used a dragillion times. Ownership of copyright, which occurs the instant an idea is written down, would be impossible to prove, and how to collect those far-fung farthings, if you do?
Another uncredited gem; ‘There are so many elephants in rooms these days I’m surprised they can get any people in.’ On a similar tack. An apt analogy as nobody dares admit the truth – of their disingenuous, self-invested, indiscriminate pro- or anti-Euro schemes.
Most capital and property in our western world has been owned in freehold by the niche nobility and a couple of moody merchant families since the Restoration four centuries ago. While the same has been run under latent leasehold by the middle classes for the last 200 years. We, the workers in massive majority, get no say; and despite hyperbolic propaganda, never have. As our democratic system is arranged to accommodate the higher bandings who are better qualified by birth and education to boss the gaff. Yet they’re well aware that if every legitimate elector voted there would never be another Conservative regime.
Which leads me to the pertinent point of this piece: the fraudulent, doctrinaire misinformation being broadcast by our media mob. Which, as above, is owned by toffs and run by their supporters. The nightly news dictating policy and preference despite a promotion of unfettered free will. My most insistent gripe on this craven kerfuffle is not that Holden Caufield, ‘Everything’s so false’, it’s more about the ugly, unrelenting insulting of our actual intelligence – seems 17million educated people can be wrong?
While working in the print for 40-odd years heard a mundane maxim: ADVERTISING WORKS! And it does. They backed Margaret Thatcher over the Falklands as the most unpopular Prime Minister unhung, and she won. They embraced New Labour and Tony Blair to ensure that nothing changed while pretending that it did.
Was a minor anomaly in 2016 when Cameron went to Europe in part to negotiate a moratorium on immigration, and was bluntly refused. Came back miffed and announced a referendum, knowing that the sanctum had him in their sights. They’d gotten away with the Scottish thing – this’ll be a pretty piece of cake. Then they lost? What a palarver. Watched a woman blubbing of her missing projected Euro dealings on the BBC news the next doomed day, as I cartwheeled around my livingroom lounge.
As soon as I see ‘The Economy’ written with capital letters I know we are heading down some shady garden path. The anti-Brexit boffins stridently scoffing americanese, ‘Do the math.’ While ignoring the obvious – that a settled community will deeply resent foreigners arriving in numbers that threaten its polity and peace. 2.3million Polish people now live in Britain who weren’t living here a decade ago – if you want an honest stark statistic. There have always been two results of mass migration: wages come down and rents go up. Has wholesale rewards for two affected factions: employers and landlords – as the tightest Conservative Party supporters since your Tory was invented.
I must confess confusion over property owners who voted to ‘Leave’. What’s in it for them? The more the merrier if you’re backing the bubble. Seems the very people who have most in common with mithering members of the europhilic media may actually be racist, and or xenophobic – the accusations aimed by same said journalists at we rabbled ranks. Incorrectly.
If they hold another Euro membership referendum this well-informed civilian will be placing the biggest bet of his life with jolly Joe Coral – on voters delivering the same result. A contingency our parlimentarians have only recently considered? We commoners are not always as gullible as you arseholes think.
